Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing records

Collection : Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing records
Date/Extent : 1889-1975, 5.5 linear ft.
Description : Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing was among the Louisville General Hospital teaching and research facilities for the University of Louisville Medical School. This collection is distinctive because it appears to hold records of some sort for virtually every student who attended the Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing from 1890 to 1967, although the depth of information varies. For the earliest years it is limited to the dates of attendance and graduation verification. A ledger kept from 1900 to 1921 records the sequence of ward assignments for individual students, with some additional biographical information and teacher comments. Grades are available for students from 1914 through 1917 and from 1950 to 1967. The latter are the official transcripts for the school’s last two decades. Administrative records from the nursing school include a few annual reports, accreditation reports and associated correspondence, recruitment brochures, applications publications along with studies and plans to convert the program from a diploma school to a unit of the University of Louisville in the 1940s. There are published annual catalogs for most years after 1926 describing entrance and graduation requirements and the educational program, and listing administrators and faculty as well as faculty guides, student handbooks, and a student health manual. A series of reports by the librarian and the library committee date from the school's last decade and a few years beyond, when it was maintained for the use of nurses and other hospital personnel. Also present are records of the alumni organization with bylaws, meeting minutes, member rosters, newsletters, and dues ledgers. Photographic memory books, apparently a complete collection from the first book published in the late forties, provide additional documentation, along with formal photographs of graduating classes beginning with one in 1896 and for most classes from 1908 on. Also present are artifacts from 1896 to 1974, including banners, textbooks, china, hypodermic needles and other such miscellany as well as individual items of uniforms, dolls dressed in historical nursing uniforms, and one full uniform with cap, shoes, pin, pen/pencil, and lavaliere dating to 1896.
