Description : This collection documents the career and studies of 19th-century Kentucky architect Gideon Shryock who designed the old capitol at Frankfort and the Jefferson County Courthouse in Louisville. Although the materials are primarily secondary sources, they provide one of the most extensive groups of informaiton about Shyrock with theses by Pamela Thompson (1962), Helen Duke Miller (1945), and Caroline Price (1943); several notes by Justus Bier; newspaper articles by Mary Jane Gallaher and Melville O. Briney; a copy of a deposition of Shryock in William Kaye vs. Bank of Louisville, November 29, 1837; magazine articles by Rexford Newcomb, Alfred Andrews, and Talbot Hamlin; letters from Arthur Scully, Elizabeth Shryock Field, C. Frank Dunn; a photocopied letter from Clay Lancaster to Justus Bier; two typewritten articles by Elizabeth Shryock on Gideon Shryock (gifts of the Avery Memorial Library, Columbia University); and copies of forms completed on Shyrock's buildings for the National Register.
