Collection : Laura Miller Derry (1905-1993) papers Date/Extent : 1883-1992 (bulk: 1937-1988), 30.375 linear ft. Description : Attorney Laura Miller Derry was born in 1905 in Horse Cave, Kentucky. A 1936 graduate of the Jefferson School of Law, Derry became in 1944 the first woman to represent a client before a U.S. Army court-martial. She is believed also to be the first woman admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Military Appeals. She retired from her Louisville practice at the age of eighty-four. The collection includes biographical and literary material, correspondence, legal reference material, and case files. The literary material concerns Derry's work in compiling the Digest of Women Lawyers and Judges. There is also some material concerning Derry's husband, Stephen, a military veteran and engineer.
